Your patient’s glutathione level may look “normal”…

September 11, 2026

Your patient’s glutathione level may look “normal”…
…but that doesn’t necessarily mean their cells have adequate glutathione.

This is a distinction I believe every integrative, longevity and functional medicine practitioner should understand.

We often talk about glutathione in terms of: “raising glutathione levels.”

But the more important question may be:
👉 Where is the glutathione?

Glutathione is primarily an intracellular antioxidant.
Its biological role is closely connected to what is happening inside the cell, including:

• Oxidative stress
• Mitochondrial protection
• Redox balance
• Detoxification pathways
• Cellular signalling
• Protection of proteins and membranes

So increasing circulating glutathione is not necessarily the same thing as increasing usable intracellular glutathione.

And this is where delivery becomes clinically interesting.

Two glutathione products can contain the same molecule…
…and still produce very different biological outcomes depending on how that molecule is delivered.

This raises a question I think practitioners should be asking more often:
Are we measuring the dose we give…
or the biological availability of what actually reaches the cell?

For clinics using glutathione as part of their protocols, this distinction could be particularly important.

Because the future of glutathione therapy may not simply be:
“How much can we give?”

It may be:
“How effectively can we deliver it where it is needed?”

That is the area of cellular delivery I have become increasingly fascinated by.

And it is also why I believe practitioners should look beyond the label and ask much deeper questions about bioavailability, intracellular delivery and biological effect.

Doctors & practitioners: when evaluating a glutathione protocol, what matters most to you?
Dose, route of administration, bioavailability…or measurable intracellular effect?

I’d genuinely love to hear how you approach this in your practice.
