Some people just have that “likeability factor”, an inner light that makes you both feel comfortable in their company, but also means you would not hesitate to refer their business to others; Mike is one of these people I have had the privilege to meet.
A reservist in the Royal Welsh for 20 years alongside a full-time role as a manager for Royal Mail, Mike learnt his tailoring skills from a musician in the Royal Welsh Band, when he needed help with mounting the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, for other band members and Corps of Drums members. As time passed, Mike found a niche sideline, mounting medals for others in the regiment.
When he left the services in 2022, he had already built a reputation as someone who was a reliable, so if you’re going to entrust your precious metals to someone, there is no one better. He gets requests from overseas and now has a growing customer base in the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand; you can’t get a more effective marketing campaign than from happy customers. Depending on how many you need mounted, he can even accommodate a same day service for that last minute invitation to tea at the Palace!
Every medal tells a story, all the more poignant when he actually meets the person to whom they belong and they open up about their background. However perhaps the medals that evokes the most emotions for Mike relate to the South Atlantic rosetted medal (the rosette indicating that the person was actually involved in the conflict itself). One of Mike’s closest friends served on the Sir Galahad, but due to being off securing the beachhead, was one of the lucky survivors.
Medals don’t belong in a drawer if you have earnt them. Even if they were awarded to another family member; they deserve a pride of place and Mike’s skills will give you something you can display, honouring the person to whom they were given.
