In business, one of the most underestimated moves is surrounding yourself with people who are already further along than you. Those who have more experience, wider visions, and a track record of tackling challenges you’ve only just started to notice. This isn’t about copying their style or competing with them; it’s about exposure. Seeing how someone else navigates complex decisions, scales operations, or thinks several steps ahead acts like a booster for your own capabilities.

Working alongside these individuals exposes you to ideas and strategies that your current perspective might never generate. It’s a form of accelerated learning. You witness successes and failures in a compressed timeframe and gain the insight to make more informed choices faster. Suddenly, what once felt like a distant level of achievement becomes tangible and actionable.

A word of caution: not everyone claiming to be a business mentor or coach is worth your time. Many are self-promoters, as motivating as a soggy biscuit and with a very firm preference for the sound of their own voice . Your best mentor could even be someone from a business network group, someone who listens, shows kindness, and shares experience without envy. Above all, choose someone who genuinely wants to see others grow rather than someone just looking for a reason to invoice.

This requires humility. You need to accept that you don’t yet know everything, that some advice may feel uncomfortable, and that your ego has to sit quietly in the corner for a while. The payoff is worth it. The right mentor or network stretches your thinking, challenges assumptions, and, if you’re willing, can potentially raise your game to a level you might never have reached alone.

Seek out those who are ahead. Listen more than you speak. Ask questions without fear of looking inexperienced. And remember, the value comes not only from what you learn directly but from the mindset shift that happens when you realise bigger visions are attainable. Your future self will thank you, and your business will too.
