As a regular viewer of American Idol over most of the first ten seasons, there are only three contestants that I can still recall the full names of:
1. Kelly Clarkson – as the show’s first winner (please ask this question in that last section of the quiz Tony!)
2. Chris Daughtry – a surprise exit before the finals of Season Five
3. Adam Lambert – runner up in Season Eight
Adam Lambert has openly admitted to his mental health struggles and has yet prevailed, both in a very competitive and sometimes fickle industry as well as in life itself, despite facing a lot of homophobia.
In 2011, he became Queen’s chosen lead vocalist, carrying on Freddy’s charismatic showmanship in his own unique way. I recall watching a programme in which Roger Taylor recalled how a friend called him and told him to watch a contestant on American Idol who had just sung Led Zepplin’s “Whole Lotta Love”. Both Taylor and Brian May flew over to sing with Adam during the final of the show and, as they say, the rest is history.
Life is not only about those chance moments and meetings, but also about having the courage to step out of your comfort zone and put yourself up to be judged, criticised and taking those comments on board in a way that helps you grow as an individual. The same applies to anyone who has set up their own business; sometimes against the wishes of those closest to them.
Not many of us will get to win a business award, let alone perform at a high profile event, but we will have tried !
