There are certain musical moments in life that make you look back and smile, like remembering a night at Xenon, especially if George Michael was there…
Back in the late 2000s, I somehow found myself slipping into the role of unofficial music consultant for EW match celebrations. This wasn’t by application, CV or PowerPoint presentation, but by pure social coincidence: a Facebook friend became president of the fan club. It’s the kind of career trajectory LinkedIn never prepares you for.
My first ever suggestion? Happy by Pharrell Williams. Remember when that came out? Everyone was clapping along like lunatics, pretending it didn’t get stuck in their heads for weeks at a time. I thought it would be the perfect: upbeat, infectious, and guaranteed to make a post match tour of thanks by the lads even better.
Fast-forward nearly twenty years. and yesterday, after the match, what comes blaring out over the speakers? This track: My suggestion. My legacy. My cultural footprint on the beautiful game.
It’s something that I find both curious and dead cute: my little musical suggestions still carry through. Someone who once got lucky with a fellow ST rupporter who has passed me down.
So here’s to nostalgia. To songs that stick around far longer than we expect. And to the comforting knowledge that somewhere, back when Facebook still was fun, in the annals of EW history, there’s a dusty footnote: “Suggested by Fifi from FB”.
Merci Jeff !
