Reports across user forums and outage trackers show repeated disruption with no clear timeline for stability or any explanation of what has caused the problem.
This is not just a technical issue, because it exposes how AI is being used in practice from the comments made to me. A noticeable number of people are using open or free AI systems as a form of emotional processing. Not formally, not clinically, but consistently enough that interruption has an observable effect and when that access disappears, even temporarily, the impact is behavioural.
Three patterns have emerged clearly during the current disruption.
1.Users experiencing extended lockouts continue attempting access repeatedly rather than disengaging. This reflects expectation of constant availability rather than optional use.
2. Paid users encountering the same limitations removes the assumption that payment secures reliability. The system is treated as infrastructure, but functions as a limited resource.
3. Outages across multiple platforms, including recent instability in other AI systems, show that dependency is not tied to one provider. It is distributed across the category.
Due to the increased evidence of AI being used for emotional support conversations, when access fails, some users can revert to human systems such as messaging friends, forums, or support lines. But people tend to share more with what they perceived to be an anonymous non judgemental system than with those around them, so frustration becomes visible quickly. This allows continuity, where the user does not need to restate context, issues, or prior discussions. When access to a specific system is interrupted, that continuity is lost. Moving to a different system requires rebuilding context from the start, which creates friction and reduces the likelihood of immediate substitution. This increases reliance on the original system and amplifies the impact of its unavailability.
So in the short term, users lose an immediate outlet which can lead to increased agitation or repeated attempts to reconnect. Behaviour shifts to substitution, moving between tools where possible. Public spaces reflect this through increased posting and monitoring.
Medium term, some users re-engage with human interaction; others show signs consistent with disruption of routine, including irritability or reduced mood stability. Trust in the system is reassessed, either reducing reliance or pushing users to secure more stable access. Many begin spreading usage across multiple platforms, increasing overall exposure rather than reducing dependence.
The underlying issue is structural because AI fills gaps that already exist. Cost, access, availability, and stigma all limit traditional mental health support. AI removes those barriers quickly but the infrastructure behind these systems does not guarantee continuous availability, so this creates a mismatch between expectation and reality.
