World Mental Health Day 2023

October 10, 2023

Today I would like to say thank you to those who have contributed to helping me become a better version of myself. You have been there for me, some perhaps without even knowing, and for that I will always be grateful.

Perhaps the most significant change in the mental perception of myself over the past decade has been recognising that I am enough. I don’t need a vast following to confirm that I am OK; I am not perfect, but I always try to do my best. I have a small number of people around me I can connect with on a regular basis and that’s enough.

I have also learnt to recognise those who would have burdened my journey and walk away from them.

Random thoughts that have helped me:

You are not doing yourself any favours by getting stressed every time you come across something you cannot control. Things happen at their own pace and we have to learn to allow this to happen. You can’t force a cake to bake by staring at it or constantly opening the oven door!

As an SME, you need positive people in your life that are both further along than you and/or have different skills. They can expose us to new viewpoints or ideas that allow us to grow our business to new levels. But above all, they can also validate what we are doing and that keeps us going. Choose these people wisely though; some may want you to do well, but only as long as you don’t do better than them…

Ships don’t sink because of the water around them, but because of the water that gets inside their hull. Don’t let what is going on around you interrupt what you are doing or play with your head, as it will only delay you and/or weigh you down.

Having a relationship with someone is a form of intimacy and I don’t think you can have that without being vulnerable. Avoiding this may feel like self defence, but in the long term it’s almost self harm. If we never tell people how we truly feel, they cannot understand or help.

Finally in no particular order, thanks go to:
The Original Helium Heads for the laughs and continued friendship.
J&S – for over 25 years, for good times and bad times.
La Famille Sharpe – for realising you can take the girl out of France, but you cannot take France out of the girl.
Yannick – who started it all; thank you for the friendship and intro to the inner sanctum of ST.
Max – told you that you would make it; happiness always. Thanks for being there and sharing your journey.
Mes trois mousquetaires – so proud of you and the world class players you are today, but I’m never doing gin shots again!
AMR family – thanks for all the thrills, Darren & Jonny for the support, Nicki who inspired this community, Marco for the photos, Oh and Ross for making a great coffee!
