Here’s the TLDR on Today’s Shift on “Green Policies”

September 20, 2023

PM Rushi Sunak today announced delays and exemptions on a number of key zero emission and green policies. In summary from the the BBC, the key changes are:

  • A five-year delay in the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars; this means requiring for all new cars to be “zero emission” will not come into force until 2035
  • A nine-year delay in the ban on new fossil fuel heating for off-gas-grid homes to 2035
  • Raising the Boiler Upgrade Grant by 50% to £7,500 to help households who want to replace their gas boilers
  • The ban on the sale of new gas boilers in 2035 remains, but there will be a new exemption for poorer households
  • Scrapping the requirement on landlords to ensure all rental properties had a Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of grade C or higher, from 2025.

You will be glad to know that air fares won’t be increased, thus penalising those flying on holiday abroad and there shouldn’t be a price rise in meat either to discourage us from consuming it.

But who knows, everything can change so quickly and in any case, the Labour government has said it will uphold the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030.

For those of you who don’t like the fact that charging electric cars takes time, thus impacting the length of your journey, it looks like there will be an increased demand for good mechanics to help us keep our quick fill cars going for as long as possible.

Oh and you will get a 50% cash increase incentive to replace your old boiler!
