What Defines Beauty in a Person?

July 10, 2024

I was having an chat a few weeks ago with a few people online about what constitutes a beautiful person (male or female) and it was interesting to see that many people look beyond the stereotypical /traditional definition of beauty. This immediately come to mind today when I saw one of the other groups renamed “Beautiful Women and Handsome Men” (the group owner likes to encourage people to post pictures by changing the name on a daily basis). I was tempted to raise a discussion about his choice of title for today, but I doubt anyone there would get the nuance.

The concept of beauty in a person is complex and multifaceted, influenced by a combination of not only physical, but also psychological, cultural, and individual factors. Here are some of my thought of what could be used to define beauty in a person:

Physical Attributes

  1. Facial Features:
    • Symmetry: Symmetrical faces are often perceived as more attractive.
    • Proportions: Certain facial proportions, such as the golden ratio, are traditionally associated with beauty.
    • Skin: Clear, healthy skin is commonly seen as a sign of beauty.
  2. Body Features:
    • Proportions: Balanced body proportions are often considered attractive.
    • Fitness: A fit and healthy body is typically associated with beauty.
    • Posture: Good posture can enhance the perception of physical beauty.
  3. Unique Traits:
    • Individual uniqueness can be very attractive. Features like distinctive eyes, freckles, or a striking smile can make someone stand out.

Psychological and Behavioral Attributes

  1. Confidence:
    • Confidence and self-assuredness can enhance a person’s attractiveness, making them more appealing to others.
  2. Personality:
    • Traits such as kindness, empathy, humor, and intelligence are often seen as beautiful.
    • Positive energy and a warm demeanor can greatly influence perceptions of beauty.
  3. Charisma:
    • Charismatic individuals, who are engaging and have a strong presence, are often perceived as more attractive.

Cultural and Societal Influences

  1. Cultural Standards:
    • Different cultures have varying standards of beauty, influenced by historical, social, and economic factors.
    • Beauty ideals can change over time within a culture, influenced by media, fashion, and popular culture.
  2. Trends and Media:
    • Media portrayals of beauty can shape societal standards and influence what people perceive as beautiful.
    • Trends in fashion, makeup, and body aesthetics often impact perceptions of beauty.

Individual Perceptions

  1. Personal Preferences:
    • Individual preferences play a significant role in defining beauty. What one person finds beautiful, another may not.
    • Personal experiences and relationships can shape individual standards of beauty.
  2. Emotional Connection:
    • Emotional connections and shared experiences can enhance the perception of beauty. A person’s inner qualities and the bond you share can make them more beautiful in your eyes.

Holistic View of Beauty

  1. Inner and Outer Beauty:
    • True beauty is often seen as a combination of inner and outer attributes. A kind, compassionate person who is also physically attractive embodies this holistic view of beauty.
  2. Authenticity:
    • Authenticity and being true to oneself can enhance a person’s beauty. Genuine expressions and behavior are often seen as more attractive than superficial appearances.

To me, beauty in a person is defined by a blend of physical attributes, personality traits, cultural influences, and individual perceptions. It encompasses more than just outward appearance because a true sense of beauty includes inner qualities and the way a person interacts with the world around them. Recognizing and appreciating the diverse aspects of beauty can lead to a more inclusive and holistic understanding of what it means to be beautiful.

So going back to the name of the group today, to me it implies only physical beauty which is a shame as it would have been a good opportunity to discuss different attributes people have rather than a “mirror, mirror on the wall…”
