Imagine a company that deliberately starts fires in neighborhoods to sell more fire extinguishers. They claim to be “just responding to demand,” but in reality, they are creating the crisis they profit from.

Online algorithms do the same:

They amplify divisive, harmful, and extreme content—fueling social unrest, political polarization, and mental health crises—while claiming they are “helping” by offering weak moderation tools.
