During our group discussion on whether, as business owners, we had ever thought of throwing in the towel and what helped us get through it, a wide range of experiences and insights were shared.
Many highlighted the personal challenges they faced, including bad health, stress, and feeling ripped off by others, which took a physical toll.
The global financial crisis also loomed large, pushing some to the brink and having to find a new avenue.
Others spoke of the frustration that comes from working for companies with toxic bosses and colleagues, where the idea of returning to traditional employment became unappealing. At the same time, the conversation revealed the importance of being flexible and going with the flow, adapting to setbacks rather than fighting against them.
The support of family and friends emerged as a crucial motivator in encouraging someone to try something that they are good at as a business.
Equally, some family members don’t understand what we are doing which can cause problems especially when they openly voice doubts about whether we were wasting our time.
Several participants shared the struggle of being misunderstood, especially when people assume that working from home is easy and cost-free.
Ultimately, the discussion reinforced the value of taking things one step at a time, stepping outside of comfort zones, and recognising that sometimes, if a business is making you ill or you lack support, it’s okay to walk away.
Despite the challenges, everyone agreed that perseverance and finding ways to stay true to one’s purpose were key to pushing through.
